Vico del Gargano

VedutaVico del Gargano is a hill town situated 439 m above sea level and is associated with the ancient Gargara, being founded by the Diomede. Its name is associated with Sueripolo, head of the Slavians, who in 970 AD came to the Gargano to fight the Saracens.

The historic centre is the most interesting part of the town, where Terra and Casale constitute a unique example of traditional local town planning.

quercia secolareOf notable interest is the Norman castle (XV to XVI century), the ancient "trappeto Maratea", a iron age burial site which can be found on Mt. Tabor and the XVI century convent of Cappuccini with its holm oak carvings.

In contrast on the coast nearby can be found San Menaio, a tourist centre which has the famous pineta Marzini, the piana di Calenella, where Ludovic II, emperor of the west, in 872 founded a monastery and Mt. Pucci, here can be found artifacts dating back to Christian times.
